Sylva Song (2024) for oboe and piano will be premiered at the Bishop’s Palace, Hereford Cathedral, on 11th April by members of Ensemble Quorum (Ruth Watson – oboe, Jeremy Fisher – piano).
This miniature looks back to the many ‘romances’ for oboe and piano which I wrote for my wife early on in our relationship. It was written partly to encourage her to dust off her oboe and start playing again, but also to try to capture the magical and reflective mood of a recent woodland walk together.
The score if prefaced by the following line from Carol Ann Duffy’s poem Forest:
…Ah, you thought love human
till you lost yourself in the forest…
