Violin & Orchestra (2015-16)
Listen to an excerpt:
Written on the 2015-16 LPO young composers scheme, this concerto is dedicated to violinist Vesselin Gellev, who premiered the work on 4th July 2016 at the Royal College of Music, conducted by Magnus Lindberg.
The initial aspiring and collapsing gesture in the orchestra exposes all of the important thematic material, as well as the general character and shape of the piece. The role between soloist and orchestra may be seen as a typical competition, but in composing the piece it felt to me more like an individual finding their way through the masses; responding, asserting, integrating etc, rather than a straight forward fight for glory (though conflict has its place).
Other various extra-musical ideas helped me to characterise the music, and an overall ‘narrative’ of sorts is evident. In calling it Violin Concerto however, I wanted it to be approached firstly as purely abstract music.
